Paint Shop Pro Tutorial: Colorize

If you choose to colorize a photo for any reason, it can be easily done with paint shop pro. Doing this is easy, and doesn't take much effort if you know the right steps to take. Below is a list of the necessary steps that you will need to take in order to successfully colorize any object in your photos.

Step 1: Choose a Photo

When just starting out, choose a photo that will be easy to colorize. Maybe just start off with a T shirt or a blanket that you can play around with the colors. Once you have gotten the hang of it, you can move on to more challenging pictures.

Step 2: Lasso Tool

The 'lasso tool' is located on the left hand side in the tool bar. In order to use this function, you will need to select it, then create a box surrounding the area that you wish to cut out. The lasso tool will automatically find the edges in the subject and cut around it so that you don't have to. You will need to use this tool on the object that you wish to colorize.

Step 3: Invert the Object

Once you have gotten the object selected to be removed, you will need to invert it. In order to do this, you'll need to press shift and L. The colorize settings for the hue and saturation are zero for both.

Step 4: Choose Effect or Color

After you have done this, you can do a few different things with the selected area. If you choose to add an effect to it, you will go to the 'Effects' drop down box. From there, you will have a large selection of different effects to choose from. If you don't know exactly what type of effect that you want, then play around with them to get a good idea of what will look best on your desired object. Like all effects, these can easily be undone if you don't like it.

If you decide to change the color, then you will need to choose your desired color in the foreground section of the color wheel. You'll find this in 'material properties' once your new color has been selected, then it will show up in the current swatch on the bottom right hand side of the screen.

Step 5: Color Changer Tool

The color changer tool should be located in your tool bar. If it is not, then you will probably find it in the flood fill section of your tool bar.

Go to your tool options palette. The tolerance needs to be set to ten and the edge softness needs to be set to one. You are going to need to play around with tolerance and softness levels until you are able to get your desired effect, pressing control and 'Z' will undo any unwanted progress that you have made.
